Common diagnoses and treatments
Here you can read about the most common spine diagnoses we handle daily at RKC. Under each diagnosis, you will find information about the cause, symptoms, and treatment. You can also watch a video that describes the operation and your visit here from check-in to departure.
Not all back problems need to be resolved with surgery; often, they can be treated in ways other than surgery. When you come to us, you can meet both a physiotherapist and a surgeon so that we can find the treatment method that will give you the best results.
Endoscopic surgeries
For certain diagnoses, such as herniated discs and nerve root compressions in the lower back, endoscopic surgeries can be performed in selected cases. This is often referred to as "keyhole surgery" and means that the operation is carried out using an endoscope, which is a tube 6-8 mm in diameter. The endoscope has a built-in camera, light source, and a working channel through which various instruments can be used to remove bone and disc material that is pressing on the nerve structures. In some cases, an endoscopic surgery is converted to a conventional "open" surgery. The decision to do this is made before or during the operation. Preparations, operation time, risks, and rehabilitation are the same as with conventional "open" surgery.
Radiography at RKC
Radiation is used in various ways in healthcare to image or examine the function of the body's organs. Images taken with the help of radiation are often crucial for the doctor to make the correct diagnosis. It is important for you to receive the best possible care. During your surgery at RKC or if you are to undergo a nerve root block, your surgeon will check your previous radiographs but may also perform a new, shorter radiographic examination. This ensures that we perform the procedure at the correct level.
